Scaling local oxygen SMEs
Helping local SMEs develop oxygen service-based models that are affordable, reliable, sustainable & scalable
Folasade Fadare, Harvey Road Hospital, Yaba, Lagos, Nigeria.
“As a hospital manager, I have many, many issues every day. Since HealthPort got here, oxygen is not one of them!”
We invest in research, development, and commercialisation of hardware & software applications that bring down the costs of operating oxygen service delivery models.
We've already helped bring to market the world's first fit-for-purpose oxygen concentrator, designed for difficult operating environments like those found in low-resource settings. But we aren't stopping there. Supportive systems - from automatic oxygen back ups that keep oxygen flowing during power outages, to remote monitoring systems that help prevent equipment breakdowns - are crucial to the effectiveness, viability, and sustainability of oxygen services.
Delivering access to oxygen using a service-based model can be sustained when the right procurement mechanisms are in place within health systems to pay for this service on an ongoing basis. We are also working with Ministries of Health in collaboration with O2aaS vendors and researchers to support the sustainable procurement of oxygen through service-based models.
The impact we've made
In just a few years, our portfolio of pioneering businesses have already had remarkable results:
100%
FREO2 maintained 100% oxygen uptime despite 215 electricity interruptions over a 3 month period in a trial hospital in Uganda. They’ve shown cost savings of 70% using their model
50-70%
As a result of HealthPort’s services, oxygen use has increased by 50-70% through improving supply reliability alone
49%
ICChange & AFHIA saw a 49% drop in child mortality from Hypoxemia from their intervention across 20 facilities in Uganda. They’ve also reduced medical oxygen cylinder prices by 17%, by cross-subsidising with industrial sales
